A known face off Maharashtra Politics , BJP leader Jayawantiben Mehta, was a lady of grit and determination. She had apt understanding of Maharashtra politics. Either as a corporator or as MLA or MP, she served the interest of the downtrodden and fought for the right of women.
Born on 20 December 1938 in Aurangabad in Maharashtra, Jayawantiben Mehta entered politics in 1962. She was twice elected as Municipal Councillor of Mumbai. A grassroot leader she was imprisoned for 19 months during Emergency Rule in 1975. She made contribution at both state and party level. While at state level she remained twice member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1978 to 1985, at party level too her contribution are laudable. After her successful role in 1980 as a member of the BJP national executive, she was elevated as Secretary in 1988. She kept the faith of the party high by getting elected to Lok Sabha in 1989. She was subsequently reelected in 1996 and 1999 and was made a Minister of Power in the Vajpayee Government.
